I am extremely excited to share with you my second edition of the ‘Planner Behind the Planner’ series – this time with Liz from @bonjournal_. I’ve admired her Instagram feed since I can remember and she started almost exactly when I did back in 2016!

If you’ve been in the bullet journal world longer than a few weeks, I’m sure you’ve seen her beautiful work floating around. She’s got a super clean feed with tons of valuable info & inspiration in EVERY single one of her posts.

Liz provides SO many incredible drawing tutorials and is one of my go-to suggestions when looking to learn floral doodles (in fact, she’s first on my list of 20+ How-to Doodle accounts). She’s been using a bullet journal for about 2 years now, but has always been a planner addict.

Keep reading to learn her favorite pens, where she gets inspiration, and what she really does in life when she’s not planning and journaling…

A little about Liz…

My name is Liz Pierson and I was born and raised in Indiana.

I moved to New Jersey about 3 years ago with my husband and my son.

I’m currently working in an Analytical Research and Development lab at a major pharmaceutical company and developing novel oncology drugs.

How long have you been creatively planning or bullet journaling? What is your favorite part about it?

I have been planning for about a decade in my own homemade planner.

I would design layouts in PowerPoint, print them on card stock, use a 3-hole punch, and tie the pages together with ribbon. That got to be a lot of work, so I reverted to lists on scrap paper and post-its.

Things got hectic, especially as I moved from graduate school to my job, and those techniques weren’t cutting it anymore!

Enter, the bullet journal. I’ve been using the bullet journal for about 2 years now and it has changed my life.

My favorite part about the bullet journal is how I’ve leveraged the flexibility of the system to become more efficient, all while using the same pages as an outlet for my artistic hobbies!

If you could only have 3 journaling supplies (not including your journal), what would they be?

“I’ve been using the bullet journal for about 2 years now and it has changed my life.”

Have you always been a “planner” or is it something you recently realized you needed in your life?

I’ve always been a planner.

Last year I was looking through a box of keepsakes from my childhood and found a page where I had planned out (to the month and day) when I was going to get married, when I was going to advance in my career, and when I was going to have each of my five kids.

Planning has always been a form of stress relief for me – getting my plans and tasks down on paper frees my mind to focus on what is in front of me.

Do you use any digital planning? What are your favorite productivity apps & websites (computer or phone)?

I necessarily use a digital calendar for work.

Other than that I do not use any productivity apps or websites.

What is one piece of advice for anyone beginning their creative planning journey?

My advice would be to search for inspiration and then make it your own.

There are so many organized, talented planners out there – use them!

They share their ideas for a reason – to inspire you!

Use their ideas, and then, when you’re comfortable, start making it your own.

Of course, always give credit on social media when posting your work that is inspired by others.

What is one book that has changed your life?

You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero.

If you sometimes struggle with self-doubt (who doesn’t?) then go read this book ASAP!

What is something unique that your followers don’t know about you?

I draw a lot of flowers, but the majority of my planner pages are full of lists (and no decoration)!

I only draw when I have time or am feeling inspired 🙂

Who are your favorite accounts for inspiration?

“My advice would be to search for inspiration and then make it your own.”

What are you currently learning or working on and what would you like to lean?

I am currently learning how to efficiently generate YouTube videos. Not sure why it’s so hard for me!

I’m also working on my health – I recently started lifting weights and am getting super into it.

Cannot wait to feel healthier and stronger than ever!

Where can we find you online?

You can find me on InstagramYouTube (more videos to come, I promise!), and Facebook.

That’s It!

I want to thank Liz SO much for taking the time to answer these questions ~ and I definitely encourage you to follow along on Instagram or YouTube– you will definitely find some inspiration and learn to draw like a pro!

I’m now curious whether her childhood ‘future’ plan worked out like she thought it would!

I love learning the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff we don’t know about these super-talented folks when all we ever see is their planner!

Let me know in the comment section if you have any questions or comments for Liz or any suggestions on who to reach out to for the next ‘PBTP’ – you can find all of the rest of the interviews here.
